FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

So glad you asked...

How many treats can I give my horse per day?

Most horses can enjoy a few treats a day without any issue. They’re designed to be small rewards, not full meals. Think “a few cookies” rather than “half the bag.” If your horse has a special dietary need (like Cushing’s or EMS), it’s always best to double-check with your vet about daily limits.

What is the shelf life?

Because our treats are dehydrated (with no preservatives beyond a touch of salt), they’re best enjoyed fresh:

Unopened bags: up to 6 months if stored in a cool, dry place. After opening: about 4–6 weeks for peak freshness.

Tips to extend freshness:

- Store opened treats in an airtight container (glass jars, plastic tubs, or even a freezer-safe bag work well).
- Keep them in a cool, dark spot. Heat and light speed up nutrient loss and moisture changes.
- Avoid humid areas if possible. Moisture is what shortens shelf life the fastest.
- For long-term storage, treats freeze beautifully; just portion them into airtight bags, and thaw treats as needed.

Do you offer Low-NSC treats?

Yes! Two of our flavors, Alfalfa and Apple, are made specifically with metabolic horses in mind. You can try both with the Low NSC Tasting Bundle before committing to a full bag. No molasses, no cane sugar, no fillers — just ingredients you can actually feel good about. If your horse has Cushing's, IR, or EMS, a quick check-in with your vet is always a good call.

Why do you dehydrate your horse treats?

Dehydrated horse treats are made by slowly removing moisture from whole food ingredients at a low temperature, unlike baked treats, which use high heat. This process preserves more of the natural nutrients in the ingredients and means no binders or fillers are needed to hold everything together. Lucky Chestnut treats are dehydrated, not baked, so what's in the bag is just the nutritious goodness.

What are the ingredients? Are there common allergens?

Every product page lists the full ingredient list. There's no hiding behind "natural flavors" here. Across the board, you'll find whole food ingredients and beneficial herbs. The only preservatives I use are salt and rosemary extract. Ingredients vary by flavor, so check the individual product pages if you're managing a specific sensitivity.

Are Lucky Chestnut treats actually handmade?

Yes. Lucky Chestnut is a small-batch, handmade operation. Every bag is made in small runs to keep quality consistent, and there's no large-scale manufacturing or warehouse sitting between the ingredients and your horse. If you've ever compared a small-batch product to a mass-produced one, you already know why that matters.

Why should horse treats be low in sugar?

Many commercial horse treats rely on molasses or cane sugar as a primary ingredient. It's cheap, it's palatable, and horses love it. But high-sugar treats can be a real problem for the significant portion of horses dealing with insulin resistance, Cushing's, or EMS, and aren't ideal for any horse in large amounts. Lucky Chestnut treats skip the molasses and cane sugar entirely, so you're not trading your horse's health for a moment of connection. Real ingredients, no sugar spike.

How should I store my treats?

We recommend keeping them either in the resealable bag they came in, or another airtight container in a cool, dry location out of direct sunlight. This is especially true if you live somewhere where humidity is high!

How long will my order take to ship?

We like our treats to be as fresh as possible. Orders will be fulfilled within 3-5 business days from the date purchased. Once shipped, you should have your horse treats within another 3-6 days depending on your carrier!

Do you offer subscriptions?

Yes! You can set up a subscription so your horse’s favorite treats show up like clockwork. Subscriptions mean you never run out, you save a little, and your horse gets to look forward to their stash without you lifting a finger (other than opening the bag).

Can I give Lucky Chestnut treats to my dog?

Dogs love our Banana and Carrot treats! Our Alfalfa treats contain a small amount of food-grade peppermint oil, which can be toxic to dogs in large (we're talking LARGE) quantities. Because of this, we don’t recommend feeding our Alfalfa treats to your dog.

What’s your refund/return policy?

We’re dedicated to the happiness of horse people and their horses. If you’re not 100% happy with your purchase, we want to make it right for you! Please email us at howdy@luckychestnut.com at any time with your questions.

What is the Lucky Chestnut Herd Fund?

The Herd Fund is Lucky Chestnut's quarterly giving program. 1% of every sale is set aside each quarter and donated to an organization nominated and voted on by this community.

You nominate the causes that matter to you, the herd votes, and the winning organization receives the full quarterly donation.

Who chooses where the money goes?
You do. Every quarter, nominations open to the community. Anyone can submit an organization they believe in. The herd votes, and the winner receives the donation. It's that simple.

What kinds of organizations are eligible?
Rescues giving horses a second chance. Sanctuaries letting the old ones retire in peace. Programs bringing horses to kids, veterans, and people who need them. Advocates fighting for the wild ones. Organizations tearing down the barriers that keep people out of this world. If it involves horses being treated with dignity, it belongs in this fund.

Do the horses get anything?
Heck yes. Organizations directly serving horses — rescues, sanctuaries, and similar receive Lucky Chestnut treats alongside the donation. Because treats are what we do best.

How do I nominate an organization?
Nominations are open and rolling. You'll find the submission form here: Lucky Herd Fund Nomination Form
